Hurricanes Harvey and Irma offer sobering lessons in the power of nature

MIAMI — The astonishing hurricanes of 2017, Harvey and Irma, have provided a sobering lesson in the power of nature, along with some modest reassurance about how Americans respond when calm blue skies turn a violent gray. The next test could come sooner than anyone wants. This stormy hurricane season is a long way from over, and there are ominous stirrings in the Atlantic, which has a history of brewing tropical cyclones that spin toward the United States. Hurricane Jose has been loitering in the Atlantic and might be preparing a run toward the East Coast this week. And Hurricane Maria is expected to hit the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean on Monday. While Texas and the Southeast pick up after significant wind and flood damage, the welcome news from the Harvey and Irma hurricanes is that, in a crisis, neighbors help neighbors. The government did not stumble and bumble as it did initially during the Hurricane Katrina disaster of 2005. Improved storm track forecasts gave millions ...

1926 - 2017 Jerry Lewis, Mercurial Comedian and Filmmaker, Dies at 91

Jerry Lewis, the comedian and filmmaker who was adored by many, disdained by others, but unquestionably a defining figure of American entertainment in the 20th century, died on Sunday morning at his home in Las Vegas. He was 91. His death was confirmed by his publicist, Candi Cazau. Mr. Lewis knew success in movies, on television, in nightclubs, on the Broadway stage and in the university lecture hall. His career had its ups and downs, but when it was at its zenith there were few stars any bigger. And he got there remarkably quickly. Barely out of his teens, he shot to fame shortly after World War II with a nightclub act in which the rakish, imperturbable Dean Martin crooned and the skinny, hyperactive Mr. Lewis capered around the stage, a dangerously volatile id to Mr. Martin’s supremely relaxed ego. After his break with Mr. Martin in 1956, Mr. Lewis went on to a successful solo career, eventually writing, producing and directing many of his own films.   As a spokesman for the Mus...

#Laspotech Students Ponders as 31st Approaches - All About Solidarity

The ASUP (Academic staff union of Polytechnics) Lagos State Polytechnic chapter had late last month called off their ongoing strike along with the NASUP of the institution, giving the management of the school a month grace to must have met with that which will quench their thirst, and the grace given will actually elapse on Monday 31st of July if their needs are not met.  The institution which is known for her fast calendar among other polytechnics in the previous years have actually had the slowest calendar year, the current semester and session which actual plan was to have wrapped off in the early weeks of this month is still yet to see the examination "time table" for the semester talk less of wrapping off.  Last week the ASUP members have been seen by students putting on different customized shirts like "31st is all about Solidarity" or "Efun wa lo wo wa, so so so"...... hmmmm, that is the management is yet to have met to their needs and if that is th...

Day Of The African Child

Today we celebrate and honour every single African child, home and abroad, dead or alive, rich or poor, living in the woods, on the streets, in mansions, in refugee camps, in war Zones etc. With a broken heart, and a shivering mind, I send out my utmost wishes to every African Child who have to walk miles to school and back home daily, African child who have to hawk over 16hrs daily just to have a sip of water and a tiny loaf of bread to survive,  those who are casualties of meaningless Wars and violence, Victims of child trafficking, those who were made to watch their homes burn to Ashes, and their family destroyed. Remember we are the king of the Jungle, fear nothing and keep being strong, we were born strong, our roar will one day give us freedom. I have a dream that one day we won't have to walk miles to school daily, for education will be at our doors, a dream that one day we won't have to hawk to survive, for our parents will be employed legally, a dream that one no Afric...

EMIR SANUSI BARES HIS MIND ON TRIBE... THE PROBLEM OF NIGERIA

EMIR SANUSI BARES HIS MIND ON HAUSA, IGBO AND YORUBA… THE PROBLEM OF NIGERIA….. A MUST READ ! The former Central Bank Governor, and Emir of Kano His Royal Highness Muhammadu Sanusi the second , surprised guests present at the Muson Centre for the launching of the book of Sir Olaniwun Ajayi. Below is his unedited speech. “Let me start by saying that I am Fulani (laughter). My grandfather was an Emir also fulani my uncle and guardian was also the immediate late Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero and therefore I represent all that has been talked about this afternoon. Sir Ajayi has written a book. And like all Nigerians of his generation, he has written in the language of his generation. “My grandfather was a Northerner, I am a Nigerian. The problem with this country is that in 2009, we speak in the language of 1953. Sir Olaniwun can be forgiven for the way he spoke, but I cannot forgive people of my generation speaking in that language. “Let us go into this issue because there are so many my...

How Winning This Contest Changed My Life - Oprah Winfrey Recalls

With summer jobs on the horizon, professionals recall the first jobs that launched their careers. #CareerLaunch  In the summer of 1971, I was babysitting for Mrs. Hackleberry for 50 cents an hour. I entered the Miss Fire Prevention contest sponsored by my local radio station WVOL in Nashville. Everyone, especially me, was shocked when I won.  When I went back to the radio station to claim my prize, a Longines watch and a "digital" clock radio, the local DJ saw me looking around in awe.  "Have you ever heard your voice on tape?” he asked. “Think you could read this?”  He tore some wire copy, adjusted the mic, and rolled tape as I began to speak. I hadn’t finished three sentences before he called for another guy, then another, to "come listen to this kid read.” I left the station that day with the biggest prize of all — my first job in broadcasting. I was 17 years old.

'God, I don't mind if I die now': Desmond Tutu, in his own words

CNN's Robyn Curnow celebrates His Africa Hero Desmond Tutu. It was the late 1980s and townships were burning in South Africa. Apartheid's death throes were in full swing, violent and bloody, yet here was Archbishop Tutu, Nobel peace laureate and activist, in the chapel of Curnow's school. "He still took the time to come out and speak to a bunch of teenage girls in the suburbs," she marvels. The voice of a liberation movement, who unlike many of his peers was not in jail, nor in exile, Tutu was out to spread the word of an inclusive, equal society that at the time still lived beyond the horizon for South Africa. "The man that I listened to then was the same that I ended up speaking to and interviewing over the next few decades." Curnow's inspiration, her choice for CNN Heroes' My Hero series, is now Archbishop Emeritus Tutu, having retired from public life. Perhaps unsurprisingly he remains a firebrand and staunch defender of human rights, continu...

Hundreds of MILF child soldiers released in Philippines

Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the country's largest armed group, ends recruitment of children as part of peace plan. Hundreds of child soldiers have been released by the Philippines' main separatist rebel group, continuing its commitment to end the recruitment and use of children within its ranks. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), one of the most powerful armed groups in the country, released the children on Friday as part of an action plan with the UN. Reporting from the disengagement ceremony in Lanao del Sur, Al Jazeera's Jamela Alindogan said Friday's release did not happen overnight. "This is something that started eight years ago," she said. "It required a lot of ground work, a lot of investigations, a lot of re-education, not just of leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, but also of parents who have had their children exposed to combat." In 2009, the group signed an action plan with the UN to end the recruitment of child soldi...
